Management of Hemiparesis by Naturopathy and Yoga: Case report.


A 58 year old female visited NIN OPD in the month of October 2021 with pre diagnosed
Cerebrovascular stroke with Right sided Hemi paresis from past 1 week with the symptoms of
difficulty in walking, speaking, eating food, breathlessness after a short walk.
She was treated for CV Stroke at a private Allopath hospital and got discharged for further
treatments for Right side weakness and Slurred speech. She was advised to follow up with Blood
thinners and High cholesterol lowering drugs OD for Cerebrovascular stroke and Drugs for
dementia BD.
She was on Insulin Injection of 50 units and Antidiabetic drugs BD for Type 1 Diabetes,
Thyronorm Drug OD for Hypo thyroidism, Anti Hypertensive drugs for High Blood pressure for
more than 10 years. She had no significant relevance of any family or genetic history.
Upon detail history taking she had a slurred speech with difficulty in pronouncing certain words,
right upper and lower limb weakness with reduced grip strength in right hand than left hand,
Looses balance while walking without support. She consumed vegetarian diet with more than 12
hours of feeding period out of 24hours and drank adequate amount of water >1.5 liters/day. Her
bowel movements were irregular with constipation and had a habit of consuming 2 cups of tea
every day.
Her blood pressure was slightly higher 140/ 88 mm/hg, BMI was 27.14 kg/m 2 . Upon motor
examination Flaccidity of Grade 3 to 4 noted in Right upper limb and lower limb, no muscle
wasting was seen. She was unable to stand and balance with closed eyes. (Romberg test positive)

Upon Laboratory investigation, Her Vitamin D levels were low as 18.5ng/ml. Glycosylated
hemoglobin was high as 9.8%. And routine Fasting and Post meal (2hrs) levels were >300mg/dl
constantly
She was stressed about the illness and disability which affected her sleep and reduced her coping
up skills. On facial diagnosis mixed encumbrance was noted.
Patient underwent treatments in outpatient department for 2 weeks (9 th to 29 th of October).
Therapeutic interventions like Naturopathic Diet and Intermittent Fasting, Exercise therapy,
Sunbath, hydrotherapy, Manipulative therapy, Yoga and Pranayama was given every day on
daily visits to OPD.
1. Naturopathic diet and intermittent fasting- Time Restricted Feeding between 10 am to 7
pm. Fruit bowl/ Sprouts for breakfast and vegetables salads or soup for dinner. One meal
cooked for lunch.
2. Partial massage to Right arm and leg- 11 sessions
3. Hot sand fomentation Right arm and leg- 8 sessions
4. Mud pack to abdomen and Eye- 11 sessions
5. Neutral enema- 3 sessions
6. Hot foot and arm bath- 2 sessions
7. Neutral arm and leg pack – 1 session
8. Cold abdominal pack 1 session
9. Acupressure to legs and arms (Right side) - 2 sessions
10. Exercise and Yoga therapy- 30 min/day

There was a significant improvement in patient condition; she was able to eat food by herself.
She was able to monitor her blood glucose using glucometer without any support with good
coordinated movements. She performed her routine kitchen works by herself. Her sleep quality
was improved. She was able to walk fearlessly by herself without any support and balance with
closed eyes (Romberg test negative). Her Fasting and post meal glucose ranged from 217mg/dl
and 267 mg/dl respectively. Her insulin doses were tapered to 20 units per day BD. She was able
to pronounce words clearly and improving with her slurred speech gradually. She improved her
grip strength in right hand and walked fast depending upon her comforts. She was comfortable
with the lifestyle changes and advised was to follow up with further treatments.
The effective changes observed by the patient may be attributed to the practice of Naturopathy
and Yoga Treatments.
