Title: A case study on management of Hemorrhoids through naturopathy and yoga

Abstract
This case report focuses on a female who is having a long history of iron deficiency anemia
and hemorrhoids with anal fissure which is diagnosed recently. She visited nin opd with
constipation, pain and burning sensation in her anus which disrupts her day to day activities. The
patient received nature cure therapy along with dietary management. After 3 weeks of treatment,
improvements were recorded with visual analog scale and Bristol stool chart.

Introduction
Hemorrhoids is a very common anorectal disease defined as the symptomatic enlargement and/or
distal displacement of anal cushions which are prominences of anal mucosa formed by loose
connective tissue, smooth muscle, arterial and venous vessels.
Case study
A 41 year old female reported to the OPD of NIN, with the presenting complaint of anemia since
23 years along with constipation and hemorrhoids since 4 years. On her first visit to the opd she
was having severe burning sensation in her anus which disrupts her daily activities. Her
symptoms were aggravating on consumption of spicy or tangy diet and on reduced water intake.
It gets amplified during menstrual cycles. On the process of case history taking, her vitals were
all stable. Her sleep efficiency and sleep onset latency were affected. The patient carried her
recent investigative report of proctoscopy revealing anal fissure and grade 1 hemorrhoid. Her
hemoglobin level was around 9.2 mg/ dl. The main aim of this study was to create a supportive
environment for the body to heal itself.
The treatment protocol followed included naturopathic intervention of cold hip bath, mud pack to
the abdomen and eyes, partial massage to the abdomen and hips and acupressure to feet and
palms. The prognosis seen were efficacy in her sleep quality, reduction in her burning sensation
and elimination of softer faeces, culmination of which was a less stress respose.Mind body
Medicine sessions were also introduced with one session of past life regression and two sessions
of breath work. The patient was also prescribed a millet based diet along with intake of locally
available fresh fruits and vegetables. As a part of yoga therapy, sukshma vyayam and practice of
back strengthening asana in supine, prone, standing and sitting positions accompanied by
practice of pranayama and relaxation techniques were given. Special advice was given for the
practice of box breathing and sun bath for rejuvenation and healing.

Prognosis

After the nature cure and yogic intervention along with mind body session for 3 weeks the
considerable prognosis noted was: The VAS scale depicting the hemorrhoidal pain was reduced
from 8 to 0 and further observation of the Bristol stool chart changed from Type 1 to Type 3. Her
sleep onset latency and sleep efficiency got improved after the treatment.
