A Case of PCOD Treated with Homoeopathic Medicine Pulsatilla

Case Summary: 

A female patient aged 21 years, visited NIH OPD (Gynecology Department) on 13/03/2021, with a USG report suggestive of PCOD done on 07/02/2020. Her report reveals;

Right Ovary- 46.6x23.0x36.2 mm; vol-20.36ml

Left Ovary- 35.9x23.1x32.5; vol-14.17ml

Her LMP was on 6/03/21. Her menses were always late, scanty, dark red in colour & passes clots. Duration is 7 days & uses 1 pad/day. Menses were irregular in appearance. Menses accompanied by slight pain, and feels chilliness during menses. She sometimes has headaches which aggravates on mental exertion and ameliorates in open air.

Menstrual onset was at 14 years of age. Irregularity started after one year of onset having either delayed menses or skipped for one or two months. She was first diagnosed with PCOD on 13/04/19, following which she was on allopathic medications for six months, but after discontinuing her medications her menstrual irregularities returned back.

The patient is of moderate built, hot patient, with a desire for spicy and fried foods, thirstless with intake of only one liter per day or sometimes less, and her sleep is always disturbed and waking up feeling unrefreshed. She has a mild disposition, desire for company and most of the time indecisive about the matters of life.

Basis of Preion:

Depending upon the above mentioned symptoms and after consulting Materia Medica, the remedy Pulsatilla was selected according to smillimum.

Selection of medicine:

    Pulsatilla 0/1, 0/2 

    16 dose each × OD × 32 days.

Follow up:

1st – 13/04/21. 

L.M.P- 06/04/21, flow slightly increased then before, passes clots, headache came once last week but less in intensity. Next potency was prescribed.

The patient was gradually improving and so the medicine was repeated in 50 millesimal potencies. She was on regular follow up visit and was advised for a change in her diet and included mild exercises and yoga along with continuation of the successive potencies of Pulsatilla. Her subsequent reports of USG showed a significant change in her size and volume of ovary along with regular menstruation.

Her last follow up till date was on 08/04/22. L.M.P.- 29/03/22. Menses lasted for 5 days, with slight lower abdominal discomfort. Overall generalities of the patient is better. On USG report

Right ovary- 27×19×19 mm; vol- 5.4cc.

Left ovary- 28×28×17 mm; vol-7.6cc.

Though the patient still shows polycystic morphology, but since she started homoeopathic medication she now has regular menstruation, and has positive changes in her USG reports as well. Patient is still on treatment and awaits further improvement
