A case study on chronic kidney disease

Story By Director NIN

A female patient age 58 years came to National Institute of Naturopathy OPD and narrated
her complaints as follows:
“Since few days I have been experiencing certain issues with my urine as it is kind of cloudy,
and the color of urine is also dark. I have Diabetes since 4 years and not taking medicines for
both the complaints. I met urologist and they have done certain investigations which says that
my creatinine is high and are suggesting me to go for dialysis. And also my HbA1c is raised.
But I am not interested and not willing to go for the same as once it starts it continues for
long. I want to go for some alternative therapies so that my complaints are being taken care
of. And I am also experiencing reduced appetite”.
After listening to her complaints she was asked some more questions so as to understand her
situation more deeply. She further said that her diabetes was accidentally diagnosed in a
regular clinical checkup with a doctor but she didn’t start her medicines and instead took
ayurvedic medicines. She was not having any other complaints other than listed above. She
was completely examined by the doctor and asked whether she has swelling often in her legs
to which she replied, no. she was checked for signs like puffiness on the face, any pitting
edema in the legs. The examinations were all normal which left no option other than relying
upon her investigation reports which were saying high creatinine levels associated with the
complaints of cloudy and dark color urine. These indicators suggested than there is problem
with the kidneys and were diagnosed as early stages of chronic kidney disease also known as
Medical renal disease.
Chronic Kidney Disease
Chronic kidney disease refers to a severe deterioration in renal functions which classically
develops over a period of years. And initially it manifests as biochemical abnormalities.
Eventually, loss of excretory, metabolic and endocrine functions of the kidney leads to
symptoms and signs of renal failure. The later stages of chronic kidney disease are also called
end stage kidney disease (ESRD).
The CKD or chronic kidney disease, with its high prevalance, morbidity and mortality is an
important public health problem. With <3% of land mass, India hosts 17% of the earth’s
population.

Causes of Chronic Kidney Disease:
The common causes of chronic kidney disease are as follows:
DISEASE PROPORTION
Diabetes Mellitus 20-40%
Interstitial Disease 20-30%
Glomerular Diseases 10-20%
Hypertension 5-20%
Systemic inflammatory diseases 5-10%
Renal artery stenosis 5%
Congenital and inherited 5%
Unknown 5-20%

The above table clearly indicates that the chronic kidney disease is mostly secondary to some
other systemic disease.
Symptoms:
The symptoms of chronic kideny disease are as follows:
 Puffiness on the face
 Edema or swelling over legs and ankles
 Pruritis or itching over the skin
 Increased blood pressure
 Foamy or turbid urine

Treatments given:
The patient was counselled for her condition and was given confidence that her complaints
can be taken care by the natural treatments. She was explained about the principle of the
treatments and motivated to come for the treatments on regular basis. The patient was given
Naturopathy treatments like kidney pack regularly, steam bath twice a week, mud baths and
symptoms of pain was managed by sand fomentation.

Her diet was keenly observed and asked to make specific changes like restricting the water
intake to 1.5 liters a day, avoiding milk products like butter, avoiding excessive protien form
animal sources. She was asked to take millets, good fats like walnuts, almonds, fresh fruits
and vegetables and fasting twice a week. The patient underwent the treatments for 3 months
along with some home remedies like consumption of methi seeds empty stomach, gokhru
decoctions and ginger pack on the lumbar area. After 3 months of Naturopathy treatments,
the creatinine level of the patient came down, but was not significant. However, it didn’t
increased and remains constant. The readings of the blood urea also showed a significant
drop and the symptoms of turbid and dark urine were well arrested and she said that the
complaints of urine are totally subsided. Her hemoglobin levels also increased and there were
positive changes seen in her HbA1c levels as well. There were marked changes in her glucose
levels also.
Physican’s observation:
The chronic kidney disorder is a health condition which needs a lot of attention and care. The
Naturopathy treatments can be safely administered in such cases which may help the patients
and the condition is prevented from getting complicated. The diet also plays a major role and
has to be altered as per the condition of the patient. It was observed that the symptoms in the
early stages of chronic kidney disease like turbid urine and dark urine can be easily controlled
by giving Naturopathy treatments.
