Ayush Ministry and WHO SEARO Ink Pact for Bolstering Traditional Medicine in S-E Asia

According to a statement issued on  15.02.2021, The Ayush Ministry and WHO’s (World Health Organization) South East Asia Regional Office signed a Letter of Exchange for deputing an Ayush expert for the World Health Organization’s regional traditional medicine programme in New Delhi. 

It has been initiated for supporting WHO’s South-East Asia Region to implement an action plan of the regional traditional medicine. The prime emphasis is on effective and usage of traditional medicine services, including Ayurveda as well as its incorporation into the national health care system. 

Singh addressed the ceremony saying that the close collaboration of the Government of India and WHO takes us back many decades when both parties joined the basic agreement in 1952 to fulfill mutual responsibilities in the spirit of friendly cooperation. This agreement extends this cooperation into the traditional medicine area that is a crucial tool in our joint quest to attain universal health coverage. 

Ayush secretary Kotecha said that the Ministry has had different interactions with the World Health Organization in the field of yoga, Ayurveda, and other traditional medicine systems. These medicinal systems have gained popularity and acceptance in the African, South-East Asian, Latin America and European nations. 

With this partnership, WHO and Ministry would work to track diverse challenges that are faced by the member states of SEAR in integrating, regulating, and promoting traditional medicine systems. Also, the Ministry and WHO will assist the member states to build the best policy, exchange of information, regulation framework, and activities of integrating medicine in public health. It will also work to disseminate information to the community, the Ayush secretary added.
